Brycen with Republic National will be joining us tonight to pour a handful of wines from California and South America that are perfect to welcome the wonderful weather that is finally descending upon us (and the great food that comes with it). It’ll be a great evening for getting out with some good wine and good company, so we’ll see between 5:30 and 7:30 tonight. Cheers,

I was going to wait until later in the week to send this but it is almost already sold out.
There are only 8 cases available and we need to know by today if you want any. The great wines from this epic vintage will all be going fast. This is one of the best prices I have seen for wine of this caliber in this vintage.

Saturday 9/31/11 Barbera and the Goat

Categories: Events, Food, Wine
A reminder that we're open Saturday from 10am-1pm for tasting and pick-ups. We'll have an open bottle of the Damilano Barbera D'Asti 2009, a simple yet full, everyday-priced Barbera currently on our floor. Will's previous notes:
"Bouquet, petals and all, bright fruit, tremendous follow through. Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins is my inside joke to myself to mean, 'Practically perfect in every way.' This wine was awesome, medium to full bodied, balanced, easy to enjoy and tons to latch on to. This is no Pizza and Spaghetti wine, it is more a Steak or cocktail wine though it would do well with all sorts of foods. Really it is the sort of thing you just want to be drinking by the mouthful at any given time."
3 Perspectives on Perhaps the Last, Best “Killer Closeout”

This is something that we've never done before, but I think that the very fact that we're able to pull it off speaks to the power of this offer. All three of us (Will, Evan, Kevin) have tried the wine in question independently, and all loved it, but we haven't really discussed it with each other. So we had the idea to write 3 separate reviews, then cobble them together for a "team offer". So, without further ado, we bring you 3 guys' perspectives on the Sao Abrivat: Continue reading...
A Spanish Favorite with Points

We do not usually offer wines to you untasted but in certain circumstances when there is enough known about the wine and the offer is so good that we risk missing out completely before we get a chance to evaluate it on our own terms we feel that we have to pass it along to you and let you all decide for yourself.
Mas Donis has been a long time Charlottesville favorite and has been carried by most wine stores for many years as a solid Spanish wine at a great price. In this vintage it has won some excellent acclaim from the professionals and seems as though it will be a pretty good thing. Continue reading...

Wine Tasting: German Wines 101
Posted on Sep, 13. 2010 by Staff
Categories: Events
The most important thing that you will do this week is to attend our German Wine Tasting on Wednesday the 15th from 5:30-7:30pm at the Guild office. Guild member Klaus Alt has graciously accepted our request to come in and give us some insight into German wine. This first tasting is a German Wine 101 event, I hope that we will be able to do a 201 and 301 throughout the fall and winter. This will be a great chance to really learn about one of the most complex wine systems and one of the greatest (and overlooked) wine producing regions in the world.
Klaus is an encyclopedia of knowledge about this subject and we are asking that as many of you as possible can show up by 6pm when we will begin as to really get the benefit of learning here we will have to address the group together. If you can't make it by 6pm come anyway and we will do our bext to catch you up.
Remember, this is the wine Guild, anything you thought you knew about wine before is now moot. Come Wednesday and understand German wine.

We'll have the AC cranked, and a lineup of cool stuff from Kysela, as well as some cheeses and oils to try. Be there...5:30 to 7:30.

So this is the last call for the Wine Dinner at Ventana restaurant next Tuesday night This dinner has come together wonderfully, we are about 3/4 booked up -- the menu looks fantastic.
I have tasted all of the wines already for this evening and they are showing perfectly. The featured estate for this dinner is Vigna Dogarina from the Veneto region in Northern Italy. We will try two Prosecco which is a specialty of the house, two excellent dry whites from the estate and two 'Super Veneto' style reds blending Bordeaux varietals with the indigenous grapes of the region. There will also be one selection from Tuscanny, a 2005 Chianti Classico from Cavallina. Continue reading...

Parmigiano Reggiano Vacche Rosse
Posted on Apr, 02. 2010 by Staff
Categories: Food
Not all Parmigiano Reggiano is created equal. This one is made by a farmhouse dairy in the remote mountains outside of Modena only using the raw, untreated milk of the red cow (Vacche Rosse) - the original breed for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano. It is a rare species nowadays, as only a few farmers have taken the care and attention needed to raise these special cows. This high altitude means less pollution in the soil, and therefore, more flowers, herbs and fresher grasses in the cow's diet. This is reflected in the rich milk and ultimately, in the cheese. Besides all that, what is more important is that the finished cheese has a rich, wonderfully complex flavor with a finish that will linger in your palate a long time afterward. Please don't compare this to the pre-packaged Parmigiano in your local grocery store that have a bitterness that mars its final flavor; this one is about a hundred times better.
